World champion Kiplimo aims to make history at 30th anniversary of EDP Lisbon Half Marathon

The reigning half marathon world champion, Jakob Kiplimo, will headline the elite field for the upcoming EDP Lisbon Half Marathon, scheduled for next sunday (21st November). With a personal record of 57.37 minutes, achieved in Valencia last year - just 5 seconds shy of the world record -, the athlete from Uganda will be the top favourite to win the race and, also, to beat the world best (57.32, set by Kibiwott Kandie, in Valencia Half Marathon 2020). If he achieves it, there will be a bonus prize of 100.000 euros up for grabs.

"I'm so excited to be here, it's my first time in Lisbon. For me it's a great pleasure to be here. On sunday I'll do my best, because the last two or three weeks of my training have been good. I'm here to run my best, maybe the course record", said the ugandan in the press conference this friday, aiming to the time made by Zersenay Tadese (58.23), in 2010.

Alongside Kiplimo, Lisbon will receive another nine male athletes with records under the hour mark, including Shadrack Kimining (59.27), Huseyidin Esa (59.32), Edmond Kipngetich (59.41) and Hillary Kipkoech (59.44). Gerba Beyata Dibaba, winner of last month's Luso Lisbon Half Marathon, will also be present.

In the female elite field there will also be some names to keep an eye on. Tsehay Gemechu, with a personal record of 65.08 minutes, made in Copenhagen last September, will be the main women in the field, and will also be aiming to the bonus prize of 100.000 euros for the world record (women's only). "I have space in my luggage for it", said the ethiopian, pointing to the big check that was behind here in the press conference.

Alongside her, Hiwot Gebrekidan (2nd in Berlin Marathon, last September; and with a personal best in the half marathon of 66.41) it's also an athlete that will aim to break the time of 65.16, set by Peres Jepchirchir on last year's World Athletics Half Marathon Championships, in Gdynia (Poland).

Besides the elite race, the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon will receive almost 20.000 runners, that will start their race in the famous and beautiful 25 de Abril Bridge.
