Ayele Abshero and Marilson dos Santos confirm their participation in the TCS Amsterdam Marathon
- Course record of 2:05:36 under fire -
The organiser Le Champion has lured Ayele Abshero to beat the TCS Amsterdam Marathon course record. Expectations of the 23-year-old Ethiopian runner, who has a personal best of 2:04:23, are high. On Sunday 19 October, Marilson dos Santos will also run the classic distance. The experienced Brazilian marathon runner is multiple South American champion and one of the most successful long distance runners ever on this continent.
The highlight of Abshero's career was his 2012 victory in the marathon in Dubai. With a debut time of 2:04:23 in Dubai, he occupies tenth place on the all-time marathon list. He also triumphed in London. In 2013, he came third in the marathon (2:06:57) and fourth in 2014 (2:06:31). This major marathon talent has also achieved multiple successes in the Netherlands. He won this year's PWN Egmond Half Marathon. In 2008, when he was just 17, he won the Zevenheuvelenloop (Seven Hills Run) and ran his personal best (59:42) during the half marathon known as the City Pier City loop in 2011.
The number of South American participants have soared in recent years. Brazilian Dos Santos therefore represents a major asset for this event. Indeed, Brazil, with its 680 participants, is well represented at the top. Marilson is the South American record holder at the 5,000 and 10,000 metres and his personal record for 42,195 metres is 2:06:34 (London 2011). Two wins (2006 and 2008) at the New York Marathon stand out on the 37-year-old Brazilian's list of victories, and his fantastic performance at the Olympic Games in London earned him fifth place.
For the last four years, the winner of the TCS Amsterdam Marathon always crossed the finish line in under 2 hours and 6 minutes. Wilson Chebet currently holds the course record (2013, 2:05:36). He has achieved success several times in Amsterdam.
You can still register for the TCS Amsterdam Marathon until 12 noon on Thursday 21 August via www.tcsamsterdammarathon.nl. Le Champion has been forced to close registrations earlier than the previously communicated date due to the high level of interest and limited places.
